WELCOME TO The Ibanez Low-End Legion Bass Solo Contest 2020
It’s been a difficult time for everyone. There’s been isolation, social distancing, and plenty of uncertainty. But, in trying times, come inventive solutions to ease the mind and sooth the soul. The outpouring of musical creativity and unity exhibited on social media, has been truly inspiring and a joy to see.

We’re thinking by now you might have that itch to perform, and we’ve got just the thing in mind. We’re excited to announce a totally new competition to allow those who craft their tones in the low end to show off their chops to the world. The contest will be judged jointly by a panel of Ibanez staff, along with the unparalleled Ibanez Signature Artist, Gary Willis. The grand prize winner will receive a brand new Ibanez Prestige bass of their choice, while two runners up will each receive a Premium bass of their choice *excluding signature models. So, whether you pluck, pick, slap, or tap, grab your bass and show us what you’ve got.

THE DETAILS


We invite you to share your best playing by submitting your video on Youtube. Our panel of judges will review all submissions and then, in the end, one winner will be chosen by Ibanez Signature Artist Gary Willis. If you think you have the chops to win, take a look at the complete details below and download the backing track (available now) to get started.

Judging Process


Ten semifinalists will be chosen by a panel of Ibanez staff, then the winner and two runners up will be selected by Gary Willis. The grand prize winner will be announced on October 25th, 2020.

Gary Willis

The Texas native studied arranging and improvisation as part of the legendary jazz program at North Texas State University. After moving to Los Angeles in '82 he became a course leader at Musicians Institute in Hollywood and also taught at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. Since moving to Barcelona in 2004, Willis has taught at Barcelona's Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya conservatory. In 2014 Willis joined the faculty of Berklee Valencia teaching masters in Contemporary Performance as well as students in the Study Abroad and First Year Abroad programs.
In demand as an educator, Willis has conducted clinics and master classes in over 21 different countries. As an author he's published 4 books with Hal Leonard, "101 Tips for Bass" provides valuable how-to insight that bassists of all styles and levels can benefit from. "Fingerboard Harmony for Bass" takes the mystery out of the fingerboard by exploiting the natural geometry and symmetry of the instrument.
With a career spanning more than 40 years, Gary Willis has released 5 solo CD's, 10 as co-leader of Tribal Tech and has been a part of a multitude of other projects including playing alongside Wayne Shorter, Allan Holdsworth, Hubert Laws and many others. His own works include legends Dennis Chambers, Steve Tavaglione, Bob Berg, Gergo Borlai, Kirk Covington and Scott Kinsey.

 GRAND PRIZE: One winner will receive an Ibanez Prestige bass guitar of their choice. *excluding signature models.

 SECOND PLACE PRIZES: Two runners-up will receive an Ibanez Premium bass of their choice *excluding signature models.

To Enter


In order to participate,  follow the steps below.

1. Download the backing track from the link above.

2. Record a video of yourself playing bass to the backing track. (Note: if you do not play to the backing track provided, your video will be disqualified). When you record, make sure you and your instrument are facing the camera, fully centered with your face visible, and the audio is as clean as possible.

3. Upload the video on Youtube (www.youtube.com) using the following guidelines.

  • Title your video as follows, Ibanez Low-End Legion 2020: (your name) (city) (state) (country)
  • Note: In the DESCRIPTION, please feel free to tell us what you like most about Ibanez and how our guitars inspire you. Be sure to share your video on your favorite social networking sites with the tag #ibanezlowendlegion2020 for maximum exposure.

4. Fill out the ENTRY FORM available on this site beginning July 1st, 2020, read and accept THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS, and SUBMIT.
